Special Educational Needs and Disabilities at Werrington Primary School
At Werrington, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed and thrive regardless of their starting point. For some children, special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) can affect their school experience and we make every effort to know each child’s strengths and needs so that we can best support them as a developing individual. Our holistic and bespoke approach to SEND support means that all of our pupils are inspired to be confident learners who will thrive in a changing world.
Special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) can affect a child’s ability to learn. They can affect their:
- behaviour or ability to socialise, for example they struggle to make friends
- reading and writing, for example because they have dyslexia
- ability to understand things
- concentration levels, for example because they have ADHD
- physical ability
Who can I talk to?
Every teacher is a teacher of SEND at Werrington Primary and we offer an ‘open-door’ approach, so talking to your child’s class teacher should be a first step. However, if you would like to discuss your child further as you think your child may have special educational needs, please contact the SEN co-ordinator, or ‘SENCO’ at Werrington:

Your child may be eligible for:
- SEN support- support given in school, like extra in-class support or specialist intervention.
- An education, health and care (EHC) plan- a plan of care for children and young people aged up to 25 who have more complex needs.

What kind of SEND support does the school provide for?
The Special Educational Needs ‘Code of Practice’ 2014 (revised 2015) states that there are four main areas of need. These are as follows:
- Cognition and Learning
- Communication and Interaction
- Social, Emotional and Mental Health
- Sensory and/or Physical
The school provides for a range of needs within these areas. Some pupils may have needs in more than one area and needs can change over time.
Werrington Primary will have regard to the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice 2014 (revised 2015) when carrying out its duties toward children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, and will ensure that decisions are made with parents if SEND provision is considered necessary for their child. This is because at Werrington Primary we recognise that partnership with parents is important in enabling children and young people with SEND to achieve their potential and that parents have knowledge and experience to contribute to the shared view of their child’s needs and the best ways of supporting them. All parents of children with special educational needs and/or disabilities will therefore be treated as partners and supported to play an active and valued role in their child’s education.
All schools have a statutory duty to publish a policy and Information Report about provision for children who have Special Educational Needs or Disabilities.

Support in your area – The Local Offer
A Local Offer gives children and young people with SEND, and their families, information about what support services will be available in their local area across education, health and social care. Our school sits on the border between two local authorities and this means that we have pupils in our school with Staffordshire or Stoke-on-Trent residential postcodes – this has an affect on where support can be sought from.
If your home address has a Staffordshire postcode then support can be accessed via the Staffordshire Local Offer pages.
